Świdnica's barracks were built mostly in the 19th and 20th centuries and enlarged in 1934–1938. From 1945 most of them were used by Soviet troops; the military sites were divided into four complexes with a total area of 121.6 hectares, and in 1984–1990 the command and staff of the Northern Group of Forces were based in the town. On 21 November 1991 the Soviet units left Świdnica — the first town in Poland from which they were withdrawn — and the sites were handed over to the Polish side.
