From 1945 to 1993 Legnica housed the headquarters of the Soviet Army's Northern Group of Forces and one of the largest Soviet garrisons in Poland. The largest closed compound, a 39-hectare area in the Tarninów district known as the 'Kwadrat', contained the staff building and command housing. The last servicemen left in September 1993 and the properties passed to the Polish state.
