The airfield in the south-east of Legnica was built before the First World War for airships. After the command of the Northern Group of Forces was located in Legnica it was taken over by Soviet units; in the 1950s the airfield was enlarged and also handled transport for the headquarters of the Group. The troops of the Russian Federation left Legnica in September 1993, after which the airfield, together with other property, passed to the city.
