Vysoké Mýto had been a garrison town since the 19th century. Between 8 and 15 October 1968 several barracks of the Czechoslovak army and the Dráby ammunition depot were handed to the Soviet Army; units of the 48th Motor Rifle Division were stationed here — about 4,000 servicemen, the third-largest garrison of the Central Group of Forces. The withdrawal took place from 2 April to 13 June 1990 and the last serviceman left the town on 16 July 1990; the garrison left behind more than 200 structures and over 86 hectares of land.
