A garrison town dating from the early 20th century; from 1968 to 1991 it housed the headquarters of the Central Group of Forces and the largest Soviet garrison in Czechoslovakia. The withdrawal, under the intergovernmental agreement of 26 February 1990, was completed in June 1991. Part of the former training area is now a nature reserve; a local museum presents the town's history.
