The New Barracks in Krnov were built in 1918. In October 1968 the Czechoslovak army handed them over to Soviet troops, and until 1990 they housed a tank regiment of the Central Group of Forces. The unit left the town on 10–25 March 1990 — Krnov became the second town in Czechoslovakia to be fully vacated by a Soviet garrison — and on 2 April 1990 the barracks were handed over to the civil authorities.
