The airfield at Neředín on the western edge of Olomouc had been used since 1963 by a helicopter regiment of the Czechoslovak army. In 1968 the regiment was moved to Prostějov and the airfield was taken over by Soviet Army helicopters; the Soviet side built here, among other things, a vehicle repair plant. The Soviet helicopter regiment left Olomouc during the first stage of the withdrawal in 1990, after which the city of Olomouc became the operator of the airfield.
