The airfield near the village of Hradčany was begun in 1938; after the war the Czechoslovak army enlarged it and built a concrete runway. In 1968 the airfield, together with the Ralsko military training area, was taken over by the Soviet Army; prefabricated housing and a heating plant were built for servicemen and their families, and by the 1980s the runway had been extended to 2.7 km long and 90 m wide. The training area was abolished in 1991 after the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
