The embassy compound in the Beiguan area (north-east of central Beijing) occupies the grounds where the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission was located from the early 18th century until 1956. After the site was rebuilt and office and residential buildings were erected, the Soviet embassy moved here in 1959; the main administrative building was designed by architect Georgy Yakovlev, who worked in China in 1955–1959, with Lev Rudnev involved at the first stage. The compound now houses the Embassy of Russia in China.
