Founded in 1955 as one of the '156 projects' of China's First Five-Year Plan, the plant was built in 1955–1959 through Soviet technology transfer; its model was the Kharkiv Tractor Plant, where more than a hundred Chinese staff trained in 1955–1958. In 1958 it produced the first Chinese tractor, the Dongfanghong, a copy of the Soviet DT-54.
