The mansion was built in 1851–1853 for the 5th Earl of Harrington; the exterior was designed by Decimus Burton and the work was supervised by Charles James Richardson. It stands on Crown Estate land and is a Grade II listed building. In 1930, with the consent of the previous owner Sir Lewis Richardson, the house passed to the Soviet embassy on a lease; in 1991 the lease was extended for 99 years. It is now the residence of the Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom.
