The consulate building on the south-western side of Sankt Sigfrids plan was commissioned by the Soviet embassy on a plot bought after the private Betania Foundation nursing home closed; the earlier building on the site was demolished in 1976. The consulate was inaugurated in 1980; it was designed by a Swedish architectural firm. The complex has office and residential parts. The consulate ceased operations on 31 August 2023 by decision of the Russian side; the building remains the property of the Russian state.
