The central fortress of Komárno consists of the Old Fortress, built from 1546, and the 17th-century New Fortress; until 1968 it housed units of the Czechoslovak army. From mid-October 1968 the fortress was gradually taken over by Soviet troops, and a motor rifle regiment was stationed here. In December 1990 the Old and New Fortress were handed over to the Czechoslovak army, and later they became the property of the town.
