The barracks compound in the south-eastern part of Jelšava grew around barracks of 1897 and was later enlarged. In the first ten days of October 1968 the Czechoslovak army handed it over to Soviet troops; it housed a motor rifle regiment of the division headquartered in Zvolen, and a housing estate was built next to it. The regiment was withdrawn in September–December 1990 and the barracks were returned in January 1991; they were then used by Czechoslovak and Slovak units until 2005.
