The plot for the church was donated by the board of the Warsaw–Vienna Railway; the foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1888 and on 28 November 1889 the church was consecrated by Bishop Flavian of Lublin. It was designed by Prokofiev, assistant to the architect of Piotrków Governorate; construction cost 40,000 roubles, and a clergy house and parish school were added in 1890. At that time Sosnowiec was part of the Russian Empire (Kingdom of Poland). It is the only one of the city's three Orthodox churches to survive and is now a parish church of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
