The church was built as the Orthodox garrison church of St. Alexis for the 37th Yekaterinburg Infantry Regiment, stationed in Łódź since 1863, to mark the regiment's centenary; Łódź was then part of the Kingdom of Poland within the Russian Empire. According to the military parish website, it was designed by the Łódź architect Franciszek Chełmiński, funded by the city's leading industrialists and consecrated on 21 November 1896; the building combined a prayer hall and a riding hall. For more than 90 years it has served as the Roman Catholic Garrison Church of St. George.
