The parish traces its history to the house chapel of Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna, from 1816 the wife of the future King William II of the Netherlands; the furnishings of her chapel are preserved in the church. The plot acquired before 1917 for building a church was sold in 1922, and with the proceeds a house at Sweelinckstraat 54 was bought on 13 April 1922 to house the chapel and the priest's residence. Later the building at Obrechtstraat 9, connected to it through the garden, was converted into a domed church; the foundation stone was laid on 9 June 1937.
