The airfield 24 kilometres from Choir was used by Soviet fighter aviation: in 1971 newly formed fighter regiments equipped with MiG-21 aircraft were moved to the Choir and Maant airfields, and MiG-23s were later based here. Choir itself housed the garrison of a motor rifle division of the 39th Army. The Soviet troops were withdrawn from here in 1992.

According to Jenny Sandiford's travel journal (29 June 2020, describing a visit in 2013), the air base is abandoned: the runway and a MiG-21 on a pedestal survive, with a few local residents living nearby.
