The Soviet embassy complex in Mauritania was designed in 1974 by architects Felix Novikov and Grigory Saevich and opened in February 1977. On a 100 × 200 m plot the reception halls, the office block and the ambassador's villa are grouped around enclosed courtyards in the manner of Central Asian architecture. Artist Vasily Bubnov (lanterns) and sculptor Vadim Kosmachev (ceramic fountains with bronze details) took part in the decoration.
