An institute of technology founded in 1958 and set up with Soviet assistance channelled through UNESCO: the Soviet side provided rouble funds, equipment and experts. The foundation stone of the Powai campus was laid on 10 March 1959; the Great Soviet Encyclopedia dates the construction of the institute to 1961–1966. Eight of the ten UNESCO experts attached to the institute in its first years came from the Soviet Union.

Технологический институт, основанный в 1958 году, создавался при содействии СССР по линии ЮНЕСКО: советская сторона предоставила средства в рублях, оборудование и специалистов. Первый камень кампуса в Поваи заложен 10 марта 1959 года; Большая советская энциклопедия датирует строительство института 1961–1966 годами. Из десяти экспертов ЮНЕСКО, работавших в институте в первые годы, восемь были из Советского Союза.
