The complex of about two hectares served from 1898 as an infantry barracks of the Royal Hungarian Honvéd. Soviet troops moved in in 1944; during the Soviet period a large repair hall was added to the old buildings. When handed over in 1990 the buildings were in poor condition; the state transferred them free of charge to the city, and from 1994 the complex was leased to, and later owned by, the county enterprise development foundation, which renovated it in 1995–2006.
