Construction of the airfield near Veszprém began in 1938; in 1951 control passed to the Soviet side, which completed the concrete runway. In the 1960s the aircraft were moved to Kunmadaras and part of the airfield returned to the Hungarian army, while a Soviet military town with housing blocks, a school and a kindergarten remained next to it. The Soviet servicemen left the town in 1990; it was guarded until 1996 and then abandoned.
