The site in Mátyásföld bounded by Hunyadvár, Bökényföldi, Újszász and Diósy Lajos streets was used from 1952 by the Hungarian army and from 1956 by the Soviet Army: the command of the Southern Group of Forces was located here, with a house of culture, a restaurant and officers' housing. Nearby, Soviet units also used the Mátyásföld airfield in 1956–1991. After the withdrawal of 1990–1991 the housing blocks were renovated and the rest of the site remained in municipal ownership.
