The cavalry barracks named after Crown Prince Rudolf were built in 1886–1887 to designs by Gyula Pártos and Ödön Lechner, commissioned by the city; they are the only barracks in Lechner's oeuvre. After 1945 they were used by Soviet troops for about four decades. After the troops left, the complex became the property of the City of Kecskemét.
