The barracks were built in 1898–1899 for a hussar regiment and bore the name of Emperor Wilhelm; after the Second World War they were known as the Gábor Áron Barracks. Soviet troops moved into the complex in the 1950s, enlarged the site by about half and erected nineteen new buildings. On the withdrawal of the troops in 1990–1991 the complex passed to the Hungarian state, and in the 1990s it was handed over to higher education in Debrecen.
