A garrison town south of Berlin dating from the 1910s; from 1945 to 1994 it housed Soviet, later Russian, troops and the headquarters of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. The garrison's centrepiece was the House of Officers, a former army sports school. After the 1994 withdrawal the site passed to the German side; it now hosts the Garrison Museum and the 'book and bunker town'.
