The military town in the forest north of the village of Vogelsang was built from 1952 for the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and was designed for about 15,000 people — servicemen and their families; it had a theatre, a school, a gym, shops and a hospital. It was the third-largest Soviet garrison in East Germany and, from the early 1960s, the headquarters of the 25th Tank Division. After the troops left in 1994 the town was abandoned and most of the buildings have been demolished.
