The training ground between Wittstock, Rheinsberg and Neuruppin was set up by the Soviet side after the Second World War on former woodland; from 1952 it was gradually enlarged and used for exercises, including air exercises. Soviet and then Russian forces stayed until 1993, after which the site passed to the Bundeswehr; military use was abandoned in 2009. In 2011 about 4,000 hectares were taken over by the Heinz Sielmann nature conservation foundation.
