The Olympic Village of the 1936 Summer Games west of Berlin was used by the German army after the Games and was taken over by the Soviet Army after the Second World War. Five-storey housing blocks were built between the historic buildings, and an army sports club trained athletes here. The troops left in 1992; the surviving buildings are protected as a monument.
