Construction of the barracks complex near the village of Lützendorf on the northern edge of Weimar began in October 1934. In early July 1945, after the departure of American units, the barracks were taken over by Soviet troops; in the 1970s and 1980s housing blocks for families and a House of Officers were built nearby. The withdrawal from Weimar was completed on 21 November 1992 and the handover of the sites to the German authorities on 6 July 1994. Of the eleven barrack blocks on Lützendorfer Strasse, three were demolished after 1997 and the rest converted: two house the state vocational training centre and six became residential buildings.
