The King George artillery barracks in Wurzen were built in 1901–1902; between the world wars one of the blocks was used by a Masonic lodge, and from 1935 the complex was again used and extended by the military. After 1945 the barracks were used by Soviet troops; in February 1993 the complex was handed over to the German authorities, and since then, according to the town's historical society, no military units have been stationed in Wurzen. The blocks on Juelstrasse were converted into a housing complex and the ancillary buildings were demolished in 1997 and 2004–2006; the barracks are a listed cultural monument of Saxony.
