The Queen Carola Barracks in Grimma were built from 1895 for a Saxon hussar regiment: barrack blocks, an officers' mess, a hospital, stables and two riding halls; the complex was enlarged in 1935. After 1945 it was taken over by Soviet troops, and from 1956–1957 the garrison was extended. In February 1993 the barracks were handed over to the German authorities. The complex is protected as a monument: two barrack blocks on Lausicker Strasse were restored in 2002 and in 2013–2015 for the tax authority, and some buildings were demolished in 2010.
