The complex beside Herrenkrug park in Magdeburg was built in the late 1930s as barracks and a military hospital. After the Second World War the site was taken over by the Red Army, which used it for several decades for an artillery unit and a hospital; the military finally left in 1992. The old blocks were then restored and supplemented with new buildings: since 1999–2000 this has been the campus of Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, covering about 200,000 square metres.
