GermanyМагдебург (Херренкруг)1945–1992Military sites
The barracks on the east bank of the Elbe in Magdeburg was first used by an infantry battalion in October 1938. On 5 May 1945 Soviet forces took the eastern districts of the city; the barracks and the adjoining Cracauer Anger drill ground as far as Herrenkrug park were used by the 3rd Shock Army, whose last units left Magdeburg in 1992. For the 1999 Federal Garden Show part of the site became parkland; the surviving blocks house public offices, including the tax office.
