The 340-metre-long barracks in Dresden's Albertstadt garrison quarter was built from 1871 for a grenadier regiment and opened in 1877. After the end of the war in 1945 it housed the staff of the 1st Ukrainian Front, and from 1946 to 1992 the headquarters of the 1st Guards Tank Army. In 1992 the building passed to the Federal Government; since October 1996 it has housed the Dresden regional government and, since 1 March 2012, the Landesdirektion Sachsen.
