The main (town) barracks at the end of Lindenallee in Meiningen were built in 1866–1867, with ancillary blocks added in 1872–1873 and 1937. In early July 1945, after the departure of American units, they were taken over by Soviet troops, who remained for more than forty years, until 1991. In 1993 the state of Thuringia bought about 3 of the site's 5.2 hectares; in 1995–2000 the old barrack building was restored and extended with new wings to a design by KBK Architekten, and in 2001 the regional court moved in. The site also houses the police inspectorate and a Bundesbank branch.
