The Consulate General of the USSR in Hamburg opened on 1 November 1972. The building on the plot between today's Herbert-Weichmann-Straße and Am Feenteich was designed in the early 1970s as an apartment block for a housing company from Norderstedt; according to the project architect, after the building permit had been granted and before work began, the Soviet Union bought the project including design and completion for its new consulate general. The façade follows the approved apartment-block design, while the interior was replanned for the consulate.
At the request of the German authorities the consulate ceased operating on 1 January 2024, while the Russian Federation's property rights were left unaffected; according to Hamburger Abendblatt (30 September 2026), the former consulate complex has stood empty for almost three years.
