The barracks of the army and air force signals school in Halle were built in 1934–1937; in April 1945 the almost undamaged compound was taken over by the US 104th Infantry Division. From summer 1945 the barracks passed to Soviet forces: until 1991 the 'Heide Garrison' permanently housed up to 9,000 servicemen with their families. In July 1991 the garrison was given an official farewell; since 1994 the site has been developed as a university science campus and the Heide-Süd residential district.
