The Festival Theatre in the garden city of Hellerau was built in 1911 to a design by Heinrich Tessenow; in 1938 it was converted into a police school. In 1945 a Soviet Army hospital was set up in the building, later a barracks and a gymnasium; the military stayed until 1992. The building then passed to the Free State of Saxony and was restored to its original form; today it is one of Dresden's stages, the European Centre for the Arts.
