The monumental building on the shore of the Pelzmühlenteich pond was built in 1949–1951 for the Soviet uranium-mining joint-stock company Wismut (architects Kurt Ritter, Adam Bugner and Joachim Rackwitz) and opened on 14 January 1951. It housed a theatre hall with almost a thousand seats, a dance hall, a restaurant and a library; it is regarded as the first building of its kind in the GDR. The palace of culture closed in 1967 and the building later served as a television studio. The 'Miners' House of Culture' ensemble with its park is on the Saxon list of monuments.
