The House of Officers of the Soviet garrison on Ettersburger Strasse in Weimar was built in 1974; it served as a cultural centre, theatre, cinema, assembly hall and restaurant. Before that the officers' club had used a former cinema on Hummelstrasse and, after 1952, the Weimarhalle. After the troops left, the building stood empty in 1993–1994 and was then transferred by the state of Thuringia to the city. Since 1997 it has been the Redoute stage of the Deutsches Nationaltheater; the second building of the complex was demolished and a museum depot has stood in its place since 2011.
