The house of culture was built in 1950–1951 to designs by the architects Gustav Pohl and Hermann Gspann for the Magdeburg engineering works that then belonged to the Soviet industrial association AMO, which grouped the Soviet joint-stock machine-building companies. It opened on 7 November 1951 and was the first new cultural building in Magdeburg after the war. The building is a listed monument and is used as a concert and congress venue.
