The air-base settlement with its flying field on the western edge of Oschatz was built in 1935 as a training air base; the chief architect was Willi Ludewig of Berlin. American units took over the site in April 1945 and it was handed over to the Soviet army on 1 July 1945; from 1947 a ground-forces garrison was stationed here, for which additional blocks were built. In April 1991 the site was returned to the German authorities. Today Fliegerhorst is a residential district of Oschatz, and part of the flying field serves as the local aero club's airfield.
