The Werneuchen military airfield east of Berlin was used by the German air force from the 1930s. After the Second World War it was expanded and used by Soviet units of the 16th Air Army until the withdrawal in 1993; in August 1957 a Tu-104 carrying Nikita Khrushchev on a visit to East Germany landed here. Since the withdrawal the airfield has served as a civil landing ground.
