Welzow airfield was laid out in the 1920s and from the 1930s served as a military airfield of the German air force. After the Second World War it was taken over by Soviet troops; from 1950 it was rebuilt and expanded to 650 ha, and a second runway was built in 1974. The last aircraft left Welzow on 15 June 1993, and in August 1993 the airfield was handed over to the German administration. Since 5 August 1996 it has operated as a civil airfield; in December 2008, 523 ha of the site were sold for the extension of the Welzow-Süd lignite mine.
