After the Second World War the military airfield at Zerbst was taken over and expanded by Soviet forces; until 1992 it housed the 126th Fighter Aviation Division of the 16th Air Army. Up to 10,000 people are estimated to have been stationed in the adjoining military town. Since the withdrawal the airfield has been used as a civil landing ground, operated by the local flying club since 1999.
