The airfield was built from autumn 1952 (main works in 1953–1954) and was used by the Soviet Air Forces from 1955 to 1994; during that period it was the largest military airfield in East Germany. A barracks compound and a residential zone were built from scratch together with the airfield. After the troops left in 1994 the site passed to civilian use and its aerodrome status was withdrawn in 2012.
