The Rechlin and Lärz airfields, part of the German air force test centre until 1945, were taken over by units of the 16th Air Army on 2 May 1945. From 1945 to 1993 the site housed an air division headquarters and a fighter-bomber regiment; about 5,000 servicemen and family members were stationed in the garrison on the southern shore of Lake Müritz. Flying ended on 23 March 1993 and the last aircraft with servicemen left on 20 August 1993; a civil airfield opened on 23 April 1994.
