Rangsdorf airfield was built in 1935–1936 and opened on 30 July 1936 as a land and seaplane airfield for sport aviation; the Bücker aircraft works stood next to it. After the Second World War the airfield and the works were taken over by the Red Army; units of the 16th Air Army used the site — first fighter units, later for helicopter repair — until the withdrawal in 1994. The site then passed into federal ownership and later to the developer terraplan; the surviving buildings are protected monuments.
