The airfield on the Pütnitz peninsula on the Saaler Bodden was built in the 1930s as a base for land and naval aviation. After the war the site was partly used by the Red Army while a shipyard built fishing vessels in the hangars in 1948–1951; the airfield then passed entirely to the Soviet air force, with up to 7,000 servicemen stationed here. The last aircraft left in June 1994; since 2003 a technology museum has been housed in the surviving hangars.
